Removing unwanted surface contaminants may be accomplished with coated abrasives and elbow grease or hand tools. Removing rust, scale, or other surface contaminants often requires equipment. There are a number of variables to be considered.
Blasting is often the recommended means of removing surface contaminants. Air blasting could be the solution. Depending on the complexity of the workpiece, production rates and the rust, scale or other contamination, other types of blasting might be better. Wheel blasting will remove more rust and scale for higher production levels, but not all parts lend them to a robust wheel blast process. Wet blasting may be a good option if the part requires a light finish with minimal abrasive impingement on the part.
